How we paid cash for our van

March 24th, 2011 by The Eldridge Family

Two years ago we purchased a new used 06′ Chrysler Town and Country mini-van (for more on that go here ). Which made me think about doing this post. I’m no expert on this, but I can share how we bought this van without going into debt. Here are my tips:
1. Save up your money first then start looking for your car. We started saving for this van two years before we purchased it. Determine how much you want to spend and how long you want to save to figure out how much per month you need to set aside. One more tip on this is to put your money into an account that you can not touch without being penalized. You may be tempted to spend it if you just have it in regular savings, most CD’s you can open with a starting balance of $1,000.00 and you will make a lot more interest on a CD than on a regular savings account.
2. Don’t buy new, buy used instead. The van that you see pictured, if we were to buy it brand new, would of cost us 40,000.00. We paid a third of the price for it by buying it slightly used. You can ask for a history report on the car for peace of mind, and you can also purchase a warranty on a used car too. Also we were able to get a van with a much better engine buying it used and with all the upgrades.
3. Don’t rush into buying a car. This was such a temptation for us, with cash in hand it seemed as though we needed to buy it now! But we waited and researched and looked on the Internet for months before we found this steal.
4. Barter with the dealer. Even though our van was on sale at almost trade in value, we talked them down to trade in value.
I hope you find this helpful if you are saving for new car right now, what about you? Do you have any tips to share? I’d love to hear them

This Week’s Shopping Trips

March 22nd, 2011 by The Eldridge Family

This week I don’t know if I did well or not, I bought some expensive items like coffee, toilet paper, and meat, but I don’t know, this picture looks small:) I spent right at $67.00 for all that you see below. I plan on doing an eating from the pantry challenge next week where I only buy milk and fresh fruit {stay tuned for that, I hope to post pictures everyday of what we ate}. I went to Food City for the meat and Kroger for the rest. One important thing to note which is very sad to this couponer, is that, Kroger will no longer let you use ecoupons and paper coupons together, and unfortunately the ecoupon will come off first. I thought two and half years ago that they would do away with it any time, so really I am just thankful that I was able to do it for that long. So here’s the breakdown:

Food City:
80/20 hamburger $2.49/lb
1 Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pie $1.25

Kroger:
Mega sale buy 10 participating items get $5 off your total bill, I did this twice:
10 Boxes of Aunt Annie’s Mac & Cheese $0.49 each
2 Pouches of Star Kist Tuna $0.49 each
1 Welch’s 100% juice $1.95 on sale for $2.95 had 1/1.00 coupon from the blinkie machine right in front of it
2 Cans of Delmonte Diced Tomatoes $0.69 each
1 Ritz Cracker $1.99
1 Suave Shampoo $0.75
2 Dannon Jumbo Sized Yogurts All Natural $1.49 each
1 Kraft 3-cheese Ranch Salad Dressing $1.49

Non Mega Sale Deals
1 Jimmy Dean Sausage $1.24 reduced to $1.99 had 1/.75 off coupon from a Kroger home mailer
1 Wampler’s Sausage $1.50 reduced for quick sale
1 Aunt Jemima Frozen Waffles=FREE from a fb promo no longer available
3 Angel Soft Toilet Paper $1.00 each
1 Folger’s Coffee $2.99 priced at $4.49 had 1/0.25 off coupon which doubled and 1/1.00 a purchase of $3.00 or more 1-2-3 Rewards Mastercard coupon
2 Kroger Sour Cream $1.054 each on sale for $1.25 had 1/.40 off store coupon which does not double
1 Kroger Cottage Cheese $1.25
2 Kroger 16oz Blocks of Cheese $2.73 each on sale for $2.98 had 1/.50 off store coupon which does not double
1 Hamburger bun $1.00
1 lb of strawberries {which are off the hook!} $1.88
2 Honey Nut Cheerios $1.63 each, on sale for $2.18 had 2/.55 off ecoupons from here and was unable to stack my $1.00 off coupon with it:*(
After my $5/$45 purchase coupon my total for both stores was right at $67! I am so thrilled with this price, with the uncertainty of John’s job right now with all that is going on in Japan, I know that my God shall supply all my needs. Stay tuned next week to my first eating from the pantry challenge of the year and see how creative I can be as I challenge myself to eat only what we have in the stockpile. Only a God who is BIG could feed a family of five on $60-$70/wk and give us so much food! He is good and may He alone get ALL the glory!

Sola deo gloria! To God be the glory alone!
